Council's floodplain study for the area records that it was filled over a number of years and rezoned for housing, with residential blocks developed from the mid-1980s. Houses built then fall inside the 1940 to 1990 window when asbestos was a common building material in Australian homes, so it is worth knowing what the cladding is before anyone washes it.
Umina's drainage is split. Council's catchment documents place Umina Beach in the south-west of the Brisbane Water catchment, and they also record Kahibah Creek joining Ettalong Creek and running out into Broken Bay. Either way, whatever leaves a driveway here reaches open water.
Permits and Central Coast Council rules
Whichever way an Umina street drains, the wash water from a clean shouldn't follow it into the drain if it carries detergent or grime. Letting polluting matter into a stormwater drain can be an offence under section 120 of the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 (NSW), and Central Coast Council and the EPA investigate such incidents. Settle how the runoff will be contained before the work begins.
