Council's coastal management work records that the Berkeley Vale shoreline shows long-term signs of nearshore eutrophication and organic enrichment of the sediment. Its studies also found groundwater carrying a substantial share of the dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen reaching the lake, so what soaks into the ground near the shore matters as well as what goes down a drain.
The same records name Berkeley Vale among the population centres in the lake's catchment, and describe the slopes there as gradual enough that floodwater can reach several hundred metres into the developed area.
